Fuente de la Cruz Verde, Drinking fountain and sculpture in Madrid historic center, Spain
Fuente de la Cruz Verde is a drinking fountain featuring a central marble statue of Diana flanked by two dolphins at her feet. The structure has seven water spouts and collects water in a rectangular granite basin with ornamental pine cones on both sides.
The fountain was inaugurated in 1850 by Madrid mayor Marqués de Santa Cruz. Architect Martín López Aguado designed it using recycled materials from earlier monuments.
The plaza takes its name from a green wooden cross that once marked execution sites during the Spanish Inquisition under King Philip II. This dark history shaped the identity of the location for generations.
The fountain sits in central Madrid and is easily accessible to pedestrians in the historic area. Multiple water spouts allow several people to drink simultaneously, making it practical for busy locations.
The Diana statue was brought to Madrid in 1620 by art dealer Ludovico Turqui. Over time, the sculpture underwent restorations, including a plaster head replacement to restore its appearance.
