Palace of the Vargas, Renaissance mansion in La Latina district, Madrid, Spain.
The Palace of the Vargas is a mansion in the La Latina quarter featuring neoclassical details across its facade. Lowered arches and floral ornaments decorate the building at its transition zones and base level.
The mansion was built in the late 1400s by Francisco de Vargas y Medina, an advisor to the Catholic Monarchs and Emperor Charles I. It replaced an earlier house that had stood on the same location.
The palace remains a focal point in the neighborhood, reflecting the prominence of the family that once ruled from here. Its architectural style and placement on the main square continue to shape how locals and visitors perceive this historic quarter.
The building now serves as a secondary education center located at Plaza de la Paja number 4. While it functions as a school, the facade can be appreciated from the public plaza.
The palace was looted during the Castilian uprising between 1520 and 1522 because the Vargas family sided with the emperor. This violent episode marked a turning point in the family's relationship with Madrid society.
