Arnía, Coastal beach in Piélagos, Spain
Arnía is a sandy beach on the Cantabrian coast in the municipality of Piélagos, flanked by steep cliffs and natural rock formations. The shore is narrow and exposed to strong Atlantic waves, giving it a raw and open character.
The coastline around Arnía has been used by fishing communities in the Piélagos area for many centuries. Its rugged shore kept large-scale development away, which is why the area still looks much as it always has.
Arnía draws surfers and nature lovers who come for the rough water and the rocky shore rather than for swimming. Walking along the rock platforms at low tide has become a popular way to experience the coast up close.
The beach is reached by a marked path from the CA-231 road, where a parking area is available. Checking the tide schedule before visiting is a good idea, since the tides determine how much of the rock platforms can be explored and how safe the water is.
The rocks around Arnía belong to some of the oldest geological formations along the entire Cantabrian coast. At low tide, shallow pools form between the slabs where starfish, small fish, and crabs gather and are easy to spot.
