Centro de Interpretación del Litoral "Vital Alsar", Coastal interpretation center in Santander, Spain

Centro de Interpretación del Litoral "Vital Alsar" is a visitor center housed in a former military battery on Santander's coast, dedicated to exploring the Cantabrian marine environment. The facility features exhibits about marine biology, coastal habitats, and conservation efforts, along with information about the salt marshes and rocky zones found on the northern Spanish shoreline.

The building dates to the 19th century, when Spain fortified its northern coast against potential threats and built defensive structures along the shoreline. The old battery was later repurposed as an educational center, shifting its role from military defense to environmental awareness.

The center communicates the importance of the Cantabrian coast to local people and demonstrates how communities have lived and worked with the sea across generations. The displays highlight the connection between fishing traditions, daily life, and the protection of this delicate coastal environment.

The center is accessible via the La Maruca area with clear pathways and signage, situated right at the shoreline and easy to reach on foot. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the walkways are rocky and conditions can become slippery when wet.

The center offers direct access to intertidal zones where visitors can observe marine creatures like sea anemones, starfish, and crustaceans in their natural pools during low tide. This hands-on encounter with coastal wildlife complements the indoor exhibits.
