Church of San Juan el Real

San Juan el Real is a Baroque church in Calatayud featuring a central nave topped by a dome, with side chapels connected by arched galleries running along the interior. A tower in classical proportions anchors the structure.

The building was originally erected as a Jesuit college church in the late 1500s and took the name San Juan el Real following the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. This change marked a turning point in the structure's purpose and role in the community.

The church houses early oil paintings by Francisco Goya depicting the four Church Fathers in the pendentives beneath the central dome.
