Refugio Giner de los Ríos, Mountain hut in Manzanares el Real, Spain.
The Refugio Giner de los Ríos is a mountain shelter located in the La Pedriza region at approximately 1200 meters (3,900 feet) elevation. It provides lodging and meals for hikers and climbers exploring the surrounding rock formations and trails.
Construction of the shelter began in December 1914 through a public fundraising campaign initiated by King Alfonso XIII. The land was donated by a local farmer, making it a community effort from the start.
The shelter is named after Francisco Giner de los Ríos, a prominent Spanish educator who championed progressive learning ideals. This choice reflects how the mountain community valued intellectual and educational movements of that era.
The shelter has basic sleeping facilities with bunk beds equipped with mattresses and blankets for simple rest. Visitors should arrange their stay in advance, particularly for weekday visits, since the facility adjusts its operations based on demand.
Guests can enroll in climbing courses that range from introductory routes on the Yelmo rock face to advanced techniques on the challenging South wall of Pájaro. These programs make use of the dramatic rock formations surrounding the shelter for hands-on mountaineering training.
