Madrid Río, Riverside park in Madrid, Spain
Madrid Río is a large riverside park along the Manzanares with 12 pedestrian bridges connecting different neighborhoods through green corridors. The park spans approximately 120 hectares and includes diverse zones with play areas, sports facilities, cycling paths, and water features.
An urban renewal project in 2011 transformed a former motorway into a public park, restoring the connection between Madrid and its river. The transformation opened previously blocked riverbanks to the public for the first time.
The Matadero Madrid cultural center offers theater performances, art exhibitions, and contemporary creative activities throughout the year. People gather here to experience local art and live performances in a former industrial space.
Walking and cycling are the best ways to explore the space since the entire area is connected by paths. The various zones are within reach of each other, but visiting everything takes several hours.
A linear forest of around 8,000 pine trees runs through the entire park as its central green axis. This tree corridor creates a sheltered walking experience that feels separate from the busier recreational zones.
