El Cid by Anna Hyatt Huntington in Seville, Bronze equestrian monument in Avenida del Cid, Seville, Spain.
El Cid by Anna Hyatt Huntington in Seville is a bronze equestrian statue mounted on a limestone base along Avenida del Cid. The sculpture shows a medieval knight in armor seated on horseback with one arm raised, facing outward toward the avenue below.
This work was created in 1927 by American sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington and installed in Seville in 1929 for the Ibero-American Exhibition. That event was a major cultural occasion that brought contemporary artworks to the city to celebrate historical connections between Spain and the Americas.
The statue depicts one of Spain's most celebrated military leaders, whose name remains associated with courage and chivalry in popular imagination. You can see how this historical figure remains alive in local memory and appears throughout the city in street names and public spaces.
The memorial stands freely accessible along one of Seville's main thoroughfares and can be visited at any time without fees. The location is easy to reach on foot and offers good viewing angles to see all details of the artwork.
The sculpture is part of a series of identical castings installed in multiple locations around the world. Versions of this work can be found in New York, San Francisco, and Buenos Aires, showing how the design became influential beyond Spain.
