Compañía Colonial building, Modernist building in Sol district, Madrid, Spain.
The Compañía Colonial building is a modernist structure with vertical balconies on its sides and horizontal ones across the center. The facade displays ceramic embellishments and shows a characteristic blend of curved lines and geometric forms.
The building was constructed between 1906 and 1909 by architects Miguel Mathet and his son Jerónimo Pedro Mathet. Madrid City Council recognized the construction in 1908 by awarding it a prize for its innovative design.
Three ceramic panels by Daniel Zuloaga decorate the facade, showing coffee, tea, and cacao. These images represent the main products that the company traded and sold at that time.
The building is located at Calle Mayor 16, within walking distance of Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol. Visitors can easily view the facade from the street, while the ground floor currently houses a bank branch.
The building combines modernist and eclectic style elements in an unusual way, setting it apart from other contemporary structures in Madrid. This mix of different design approaches makes it an interesting example of the architectural diversity of that era.
