La Atalaya

La Atalaya is a mountain summit reaching 2083 meters and the highest peak in the Sierra de las Cabras range in Albacete province. The limestone mountain displays distinct vegetation zones, with holm oaks at lower elevations and specialized pines and creeping junipers at higher altitudes.

The summit has long served as a reference point for geographical surveys in the region, marked by a geodetic vertex known as Las Cabras. This measurement marker has aided mapmakers across generations in recording the landscape.

The summit draws hikers and local residents who gather to experience the landscape and share the view across surrounding valleys. This regular visitation has made it a meeting point that holds meaning for people living in the region.

Most hikers begin at Aldea de Fuente Carrasca at about 1521 meters and follow the Pedro Guerrero ravine through forested terrain to reach the summit. Good footwear and plenty of water are advisable, as the elevation gain and terrain can be demanding.

The ridge is known for displaying multiple layers of vegetation that shift noticeably with elevation, each hosting distinct alpine plant communities. These natural contrasts turn the climb into a journey through different habitats.
