Castillo

Castillo is a 15th century fortress in Chipiona with square towers, pointed arch windows, and stone battlements that overlook the Atlantic Ocean near Playa de las Canteras. The structure has been preserved and now operates as an interpretation center with exhibition spaces inside.

The fortress was built in the 15th century to defend against pirate raids from the sea. After serving as a military garrison and later as a Civil Guard barracks, it was eventually purchased and restored by the municipality.

The castle now serves as a space where visitors can explore how Cadiz province connected to the discovery and exploration of the Americas. The exhibitions inside show how these distant voyages shaped the local community and its identity over centuries.

From 1890 to 1989 the fortress functioned as a hotel before the municipality acquired and opened it to the public. This unexpected shift from military stronghold to guest accommodation shows how the building adapted to different times and needs.
