Chipiona Lighthouse, Tallest lighthouse in Spain at Chipiona, Cádiz.
The Chipiona Lighthouse is a 62-meter stone structure on the coast of Cádiz with a tapered cylindrical tower. Its form rises prominently above the harbor area and displays distinctive architectural features typical of 19th-century Spanish lighthouse design.
Construction began in 1863 under engineers Jaime Font and Canuto Corroza, with the light first activated in 1867. The structure was built during a period when Spain was modernizing its coastal navigation systems.
The beacon serves as a reference point for ships entering the Guadalquivir River and has become a symbol of the local maritime identity. Its stone tower is something sailors and residents have relied on for generations.
You can visit the tower by arranging a tour, which requires climbing 322 steps to reach the observation platform. The climb is manageable in stages, and going early or late in the day helps avoid midday heat.
The light serves dual navigation purposes for both maritime and air traffic. Its halogen lamp produces flashes every ten seconds that can be seen from far out at sea, making it visible across a wide marine area.
