Bahir Dar University, university in Ethiopia
Bahir Dar University is an institution in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, comprising five colleges and several institutes offering programs in health sciences, business, agriculture, natural sciences, and engineering. The campus spans multiple locations including Zenzelma, Peda, Gish Abay, and Poly, each with its own facilities and learning spaces.
The institution was established in 1954 as a technical school and gained university status in 2001, formed by merging Bahir Dar Polytechnic and Bahir Dar Teachers' College. The Polytechnic, founded in the 1960s with Soviet assistance, focused on technical training and laid the foundation for later engineering and technology programs.
The university's name reflects its location near the source of the Blue Nile, emphasizing the importance of knowledge and learning in this region. Walking through the campus, you notice students from Ethiopia and surrounding countries mixing together, sharing ideas and building friendships across different backgrounds.
The campus is spread across multiple locations, so it helps to plan which areas you want to explore before visiting. More than 20 libraries are distributed throughout the grounds, offering books, journals, and digital materials for study and research.
The campus houses Ethiopia's only maritime academy, where students study ships and water transportation. It also offers a Land Administration program, the first of its kind in the country, teaching students about land law, measurement, and computer-based mapping.
