Kusikivi, Glacial erratic in Kurikka, Finland.
Kusikivi is a massive granite boulder in Kurikka that rests on a curved bedrock surface with just a few small contact points. The stone measures roughly 7 by 4 by 5 meters and appears to balance precariously on the underlying rock.
The boulder arrived at its present location between 11,000 and 12,000 years ago when glaciers carried it across the land during the ice age. The melting ice left it behind in this spot, balanced on the bedrock as it remains today.
Local residents have developed numerous stories about the formation of Kusikivi, attributing its peculiar positioning to supernatural forces and mythical creatures.
A marked circular trail of about 2.2 kilometers winds through the surrounding forest to bring visitors to the stone. The path is easy to follow and offers a pleasant walk through the natural surroundings.
The boulder consists of granite-cordierite-mica-gneiss and maintains its position on the underlying rock through a remarkably small contact area.
