Lac des Hermines, Artificial lake in Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, France
Lac des Hermines is an artificial lake situated at 1,276 meters elevation in the Auvergne mountains, surrounded by sandy swimming areas and grass banks. The water body covers around 14 hectares and forms a bright focal point within the surrounding landscape.
The reservoir was built in 1968 to support regional agriculture and industry with a reliable water supply. It gradually transformed into a public recreation area that serves both practical and leisure needs.
The lake serves as a gathering place for locals, especially during summer months when swimmers and players occupy the shoreline. The community regularly uses the space for outdoor social activities and informal sports.
A walking path circles the entire lake, making a complete loop possible in about 30 minutes. Free parking, restrooms, and drinking water stations are available for visitors.
The adjacent Parc des Hermin'eau features playgrounds designed for different age groups, each with distinct equipment and design. The park also dedicates specific zones to pétanque and other beach games where locals often gather.
