Lac du Tech, reservoir in France
Lac du Tech is a reservoir in the Hautes-Pyrenees created by a concrete dam built between 1949 and 1951. The lake sits at about 1200 meters elevation and holds roughly 1.35 million cubic meters of water, surrounded by walking trails that circle the shore.
The reservoir was created by building a dam on the Gave d'Arrens river between 1949 and 1951. The project was part of efforts to harness water power and generate electricity for the region.
The name Tech comes from the local Gascon language and relates to plants growing in the area. The lake has become part of local life, reminding people of how humans and the mountains work together.
The lake is easily accessed by two main trails that allow a complete loop around the shore without requiring much hiking experience. Swimming is not permitted in the water, and winter access can be difficult due to snow and ice on the mountain roads.
Otters have returned to the area after being hunted for their fur and now inhabit the waters and banks of the lake. Their presence signals that water quality and habitat conditions have improved significantly since the dam's construction.
