Clos de Vougeot, Winery in Côte-d'Or, France
Clos de Vougeot is a winery estate comprising around 50 hectares of vineyards enclosed by stone walls, forming Burgundy's largest grand cru vineyard in the Côte de Nuits region. More than 80 different proprietors manage sections of the land, each producing red wine exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes under strict quality standards.
Cistercian monks established this vineyard in the 12th century and built the surrounding walls by the 14th century. Wine-making techniques developed by these monks continue to influence production methods used today.
The château hosts the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, an organization dedicated to promoting Burgundy's wines and traditions. Visitors can experience how this place remains deeply connected to the region's wine heritage and celebrations.
The estate is open to visitors during daylight hours, allowing you to walk around the walls and explore the château building. The best time to visit is outside the harvest season, when vineyard activity is less intensive.
The vineyard slopes from northwest to southeast across its rectangular layout, with varying soil types that create distinct wine characteristics depending on exact location. This natural variation means wines from different sections of this single estate can taste noticeably different from one another.
