South America, Cast iron statue at Musée d'Orsay, France

The South America statue measures 2.1 meters in height and 1.62 meters in width, featuring a seated woman wearing ornamental attire with a decorative headdress.

The sculpture was commissioned by the State for the 1878 Paris Exposition-Universelle and stood at the Palais du Trocadéro until 1935 before being relocated to Nantes.

The artwork forms part of a set of six monumental figures representing different continents, incorporating names of South American countries in its inscriptions.

Visitors can examine this restored cast iron sculpture on the esplanade of the Musée d'Orsay, located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris.

The foundry mark 'L. Denonvilliers et Fils a Sermaize sur Saulx' remains visible on the left side of the statue, documenting its manufacturing origin.
