Argos

Argos is an archaeological site in Greece with ruins spread across the Aspis and Larissa hills. The complex contains an ancient theater, an agora, religious sanctuaries, and Roman period structures scattered throughout the landscape.

The settlement began about 7,000 years ago as a Mycenaean stronghold that later became a powerful city-state. Around the 7th century BC, this location established standardized weights and measures that shaped ancient commerce.

The ancient theater hosts summer performances where audiences sit where spectators gathered over two millennia ago. Local cultural events bring the stage back to life, connecting modern visitors with the place's theatrical heritage.

The site provides parking and marked pathways to navigate the scattered ruins across the landscape. Plan for uneven terrain and bring sun protection when visiting, as shade is limited across the hillsides.

Systematic excavation began in 1892 and continues today under the French School's direction. This ongoing work has uncovered layers of settlement spanning from Neolithic times through the Byzantine period.
