Great Lutheran Church, Békéscsaba, Lutheran church in Békéscsaba, Hungary.
The Great Lutheran Church in Békéscsaba is a Protestant worship building with a 75-meter tower and a uniform front decorated with 20 identical windows. The interior rises 27 meters high and holds approximately 3500 people.
The first cornerstone was laid in 1807, but money problems delayed construction for many years. Work restarted in 1813 when enough building materials could finally be gathered.
The interior features wooden balconies arranged in a traditional layout that reflects how the congregation once gathered together. These spaces let you see how worship was organized according to the customs of the time.
The inside space is laid out so you can easily see the overall structure and all the architectural details. Plan to spend enough time to walk around and take in the different areas and their decorations.
The building contains a remarkable organ with nearly 3000 pipes and several dozen registers that amplifies the choir's singing. The original large main bell was lost during wartime and had to be replaced afterward.
