University of Dublin, National university in Dublin, Ireland
The University of Dublin is a national higher education institution in the heart of the Irish capital, extending over a connected complex of lecture halls, research facilities, and green spaces. The layout combines sandstone facades from earlier centuries with contemporary glass and concrete buildings along rectangular courtyards.
Elizabeth I granted the charter in 1592 following the English model to establish a Protestant educational institution on the island. Over the centuries the grounds expanded through donations and new construction, evolving into a center for science and scholarship in Ireland.
The name comes from the Elizabethan charter, while today all degrees are awarded through the sole college of the institution, Trinity College. Visitors experience the connection between formal university structure and visible campus life through the daily presence of students in the cobbled squares and library halls.
The main entrance stands on Grafton Street, a short walk from O'Connell Bridge, and provides access to publicly accessible areas such as courtyards and exhibition spaces. Outside exam periods visitors can stroll through the older sections and get a sense of student daily life.
During graduation ceremonies in the historic Public Theatre all degrees are read out in Latin, a practice retained since the founding. Additionally, Senate members may keep their hat on during debates under an old tradition, a mark of academic independence.
