Kishle , Archaeological heritage site near Tower of David, Jerusalem, Israel
The excavated sections of Kishle reveal multiple architectural layers spanning from the First Temple period through Ottoman military construction to British Mandate times.
Originally built in 1834 as Ottoman military barracks, the Kishle structure later served as a prison for Jewish resistance fighters during British rule in the 1940s.
Archaeological findings within Kishle include walls from King Hezekiah's time, Hasmonean dynasty structures, and remnants of Herod's palace complex from different civilizations.
The site offers guided tours in English every Friday at 10:00 AM and Hebrew tours on Thursdays at 10:30 AM, with advance reservations required.
A 17-meter-high excavated section contains evidence of continuous urban development from the 8th century BC through multiple historical periods of Jerusalem.
