Weaving families work at specialized silk looms for generations, creating the famous Patta sarees known across India. This craft shapes daily life in several neighborhoods, where the sound of looms can be heard and workshops open directly onto the streets.
The Howrah-Chennai railway line connects the town with larger cities across the country, and the station sits centrally within the urban area. Rangeilunda Airport offers flights within the region, making arrival from distant areas more convenient.
The weavers working today descend from craftsmen who moved here from Rajahmundry in the late 17th century at the invitation of regional rulers. These migrants brought their weaving techniques and established the silk tradition that continues today.
