Majuli, River island in Assam, India
Majuli is a river island in the Brahmaputra in Majuli district, Assam, India. Sandy banks alternate with wetlands, while villages scatter among rice fields and bamboo forests.
The island formed through deposits from the Brahmaputra over centuries. Monks established religious communities in the 16th century that continue to this day.
The Satras serve as centers for traditional dance and music, where monks pass down the Sattriya art form. Visitors can watch rehearsals and performances that tell religious stories through drumming and cymbals.
Visits during the dry season from October to April bring more stable weather and easier access. Lodging sits mainly in Garamur and Kamalabari, the two largest settlements.
Weavers craft masks and textiles from bamboo and natural fibers used in religious performances. Workshops open their doors for visitors who want to watch the entire making process from start to finish.
