Molai forest

Molai forest, Forest sanctuary in Majuli, India.

Molai forest is a natural landscape covering around 550 hectares on a sandbar in the Brahmaputra River with dense vegetation and diverse wildlife. The area contains thousands of trees and bamboo stands, along with habitats for tigers, rhinoceroses, deer, and primates.

In 1979, a teenager started transforming a bare sandbar into forest by planting bamboo seedlings near Kokilamukh. Over the following decades, continuous planting efforts created forest habitats that eventually attracted diverse wildlife populations.

The place has become a symbol of what one person's dedication can achieve, reflecting how local communities value land restoration and forest conservation. Visitors can see how the landscape tells a story of persistence and environmental commitment through the daily life of the forest.

The area is amphibious and shaped by seasonal river flows, making certain times better for visits than others. Elephant herds traverse the territory regularly, so caution and following local guidance is important for safe exploration.

The forest remained hidden from official recognition for over 30 years until officials discovered it by chance in 2008 while tracking elephants. The discovery revealed that the entire woodland had been created through the solitary efforts of one individual.
