Madras State, Former administrative region in South India
Madras State was an administrative region in South Asia that extended across territories of present-day Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The region encompassed diverse landscapes and populations with different languages and customs.
The state came into existence in 1950 following India's independence and succeeded the British-administered Madras Presidency. It was dissolved in 1969 and its territory was divided among newly formed states.
Tamil and Telugu served as official languages in Madras State, representing the linguistic diversity of 57 million inhabitants across the southern territories.
Today visitors can explore the history of this region through museums and documents in Chennai, which was the historic administrative center. Various locations across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and elsewhere preserve traces of this former administrative structure.
The territory underwent multiple reorganizations based on linguistic boundaries, leading to the formation of separate states including Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh.
