Savitribai Phule Pune University is a state public university in the Ganeshkhind area of Pune, India. The campus spreads across 166 hectares and houses 46 academic departments alongside partnerships with more than 300 research institutions.
The institution began operations in 1949 at the Nizam Guest House within the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute. M.R. Jayakar became the first vice-chancellor and led the founding phase of the institution.
The institution bears the name of a 19th-century educator who opened the first girls' school in Pune. Her legacy continues through the many female students who now study and conduct research across the campus.
The International Centre offers accommodation for foreign students. Courses in German, French, Russian, Japanese and Spanish are available on a regular basis.
Alumni include a former prime minister and a former president of India. These two figures shaped Indian politics in recent history.
