Kanpur Central railway station, Surface railway station in Kanpur Cantonment, India.
Kanpur Central is a surface railway station in Kanpur Cantonment with ten platforms, ranking as the third largest junction in the country. The track layout extends over several kilometers and connects train routes from all directions across northern India.
The station opened in 1930 to replace the former junction facility and became the main railway point for the region. The complex received several expansions over the decades to handle growing traffic volumes.
The station carries the name Central because it connects both the civil station area and the military Cantonment district that define the city layout. Commuters meet in the main hall every day while street vendors sell tea and snacks near the exits.
An electric locomotive shed sits on the grounds and houses different engines for regional connections. The platforms all rest at ground level, so travelers do not need to use stairs or underpasses when moving between trains.
The interlocking system holds one of the most complex rail switch networks in the world and ranks third after Bandel and Kharagpur. Engineers from other countries sometimes visit the facility to study the technical design.
