All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Non-governmental organization in New Delhi, India
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board is an Islamic organization based in New Delhi that deals with personal status matters for Muslims in India. It operates as a representative body without government affiliation and provides guidance on issues such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance.
Islamic scholars founded the organization in 1973 in response to parliamentary proposals to change religious family laws. It emerged as a reaction to efforts by the Indian government to introduce a uniform civil code.
The board integrates representatives from different Islamic schools of thought, maintaining 201 members in its general committee and 51 in the executive committee.
The organization publishes guidelines and documents that help Muslims with legal questions about personal status matters. Its work occurs through a network of members who provide religious legal opinions and advise on the application of Islamic regulations.
The organization created a standard contract form for Muslim marriages in 2003 that specifies conditions for dissolution cases. This document follows the Sunni legal tradition and is used at the time of marriage.
