Chadayamangalam is a small village in Kollam district, Kerala, situated along the Ithikkara River. It features green agricultural fields where farmers grow rice, coconut, rubber, and spices, and is home to the world's largest bird sculpture at the Jatayu Earth's Center.
The village traces its origins over a thousand years back when it was part of the Ay kingdom, caught between the Pandya and Chera dynasties. Nearby rock-cut temples from the 8th or 9th century reflect the architectural styles of those ancient rulers.
The name Chadayamangalam comes from the ancient name Jatayumangalam, referring to Jatayu, the legendary bird from the Ramayana. This mythological connection shapes the village's identity and remains visible in its temples and the way locals speak about their homeland.
The village is about 38 kilometers from Kollam and 43 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram and can be easily reached by road. Wear comfortable shoes for exploring hills and walking paths, especially when visiting the Jatayu sites and surrounding areas.
A lesser-known attraction near the Kodandarama temple are small water tanks called Kokkarani, believed to have been created by Jatayu himself according to local legend. Many visitors come to bathe in the water, which locals believe has healing properties.
