Kadakkavoor Grama Panchayat is a rural administrative unit in Thiruvananthapuram district comprising several small villages and farmland areas. The region contains settlements such as Sankaramangalam, Melattingal, and Vilayilmoola, which are connected by local roads.

Kadakkavoor was under Venad and later came under the Attingal queen and then the British. The panchayat was formed in 1954, and Adv. Sujathan was president of its first governing body. The Chirayinkil Taluk Coir Workers' Union, the district's earliest registered trade union, was founded at Vakkom on 6 December 1940.

The name is explained locally as kadal (sea) and kayal (backwater) joined to ooru (settlement), or from adakka, areca nut, once grown on the higher ground. The Anchuthengu coir made here is well known, and the Mahatma Gandhi Recreation Club and Kalidasa Reading Room carry on the village's cultural life.

Kadakkavoor railway station lies on the Thiruvananthapuram–Kollam line of the Southern Railway and serves Kadakkavoor, Vakkom, Anchuthengu, Chirayinkeezhu, Vettur, Manambur, Ottur and Attingal. Land has been acquired for a railway over-bridge at the Kadakkavoor–Murukkumpuzha level crossing (LC No. 570). The nearest degree college is 5–10 km away and the nearest community health centre more than 10 km away.

Kadakkavoor railway station was once the most important stop between Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam in British India: steam engines halted here to take on water and coal, and goods from the Anjengo fort, including pepper and weapons, were loaded and unloaded here.
