Jacobite Syrian Cathedral Kundara

Jacobite Syrian Cathedral Kundara is a Syrian Orthodox church building with several altars dedicated to different saints. The central worship area features separate altar spaces honoring Mary, Peter, and Thomas.

The building was founded in 1871 and received a portion of the Holy Girdle of the Virgin Mary in 1972. This relic made it an important pilgrimage destination in Kerala.

The cathedral honors Syrian Orthodox traditions through services that blend Syriac and Malayalam elements in visible ways. Visitors notice how Middle Eastern and South Indian practices merge in the rituals and decoration.

Regular religious services take place with Sunday masses conducted in Malayalam, English, and Syriac. Visitors should expect traditional liturgy and expect the space to be used for active worship.

The Pakalomattom family, whose members trace their baptismal lineage to Apostle Thomas, forms the core congregation. This apostolic connection is unusual and gives the community deep historical roots.
