Digambara Jaina Temple, Khandagiri, Jain temple at Khandagiri hill, India

The Digambara Jaina Temple sits at the summit of Khandagiri hill with three main structures built in black stone and white marble. The complex spans multiple levels connected by pathways and staircases that wind through the hilltop.

The site traces back to the first century BCE when King Kharavela ordered rock-cut caves to be built nearby to establish a spiritual center for Jain followers. This early foundation made the location an important pilgrimage destination for many centuries.

The temple houses statues of Tirthankaras carved in black stone and white marble that draw visitors and worshippers to the site. People come here to pay respects and walk through the sacred spaces on the hillside.

The temple is located roughly 10 kilometers from Bhubaneswar railway station and 6 kilometers from the airport, with access available year-round. The walk to the hilltop involves climbing stairs, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water for the ascent.

The complex includes 33 caves spread across Khandagiri and Udayagiri hills, decorated with ancient Brahmi script inscriptions and detailed animal carvings. These archaeological features showcase the craftsmanship of ancient artisans and reveal details of life from 2000 years ago.
