Dihang-Dibang Biosphere Reserve, Biosphere reserve in Upper Siang district, India
Dihang-Dibang Biosphere Reserve is a protected area in Upper Siang district, India, covering a wide range of elevations that support distinct vegetation zones. The landscape shifts from dense forests at lower elevations through moist valley floors to open high-altitude terrain where vegetation thins and mountain slopes become steeper.
The reserve received recognition from the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme in 2017, joining a global network of sites committed to conservation. This designation built on decades of efforts to protect the biodiversity of the eastern Himalayas and encourage coexistence between human activity and natural habitats.
Indigenous communities within the reserve maintain traditional farming practices and resource management techniques passed down through generations.
Visitors need a permit from local authorities before entering the reserve and should expect limited infrastructure in remote zones. The months between October and March offer more stable weather and better conditions for walking and observing wildlife.
Two new flying squirrel species were scientifically described here in recent years: the Mechuka giant flying squirrel and the Mishmi Hills giant flying squirrel. Both species live in the tree canopy of higher forest zones and are active mainly at night, making them difficult to observe.
