Goshree bridges, Bridge network in Kochi, India
Goshree bridges are three elevated structures that span across backwaters and connect multiple islands in Kochi to the mainland. Each bridge has separate lanes for vehicles and pathways for people on foot, allowing movement between the islands and the city.
Construction of these bridges began in the late 1990s to improve connections between the islands and mainland. The first segment opened to traffic in 2001.
The bridges link different communities across the islands, enabling residents to participate in local festivals and celebrations throughout the region.
Traffic is heavy during peak hours, especially with buses and private vehicles crossing constantly. Pedestrians should note that walking these bridges for leisure is possible but not particularly comfortable due to the focus on vehicle traffic.
The engineering design incorporates measures to protect marine ecosystems while accommodating both vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement across the waterways.
