Mattancherry Bridge, Transportation bridge in Kochi, India
Mattancherry Bridge is a transportation crossing that spans 486 meters over Vembanad Lake, linking the western mainland of Kochi to Willingdon Island. The structure uses steel and concrete to form a key connection between the islands.
The original structure was completed in 1940 under the supervision of Sir Robert Bristow and included a central lift mechanism to allow large vessels to pass through to Cochin Port. A new bridge was constructed in 1998 to handle increasing traffic demands.
Local people call the old structure the London Bridge of Kochi because of its British engineering style and design that resembles Thames crossings. This name shows how the structure became part of the area's identity.
The newer structure built in 1998 carries the main traffic flow between the islands, while the older crossing remains available for two-wheelers and people on foot. Walking across the older structure offers better views and a safer experience for pedestrians.
During strength testing of the original bridge, elephants were walked across the structure to prove its durability. This unusual testing method reflects the construction approaches of the colonial period.
