Sabarigiri International Airport, proposed airport
Sabarigiri International Airport is a proposed project for a new airport in Kottayam District, Kerala, situated on approximately 2,250 acres of land near Cheruvally Estate. The project is planned to include a runway over 3,500 meters long, designed to handle large aircraft and serve both travelers and pilgrims visiting the region.
The project received preliminary approval from Kerala state in 2017 and was assigned feasibility studies. In 2023, the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation officially approved the initiative, and by 2024 the government obtained central clearances to proceed with development and construction preparations.
The site is primarily connected to pilgrimage to the Sabarimala Temple, one of Kerala's most important religious destinations. The airport is intended to serve millions of pilgrims who visit the shrine each year, especially during peak seasons when devotees travel from across the country.
The site is currently in the planning and clearance phase, with construction not yet begun. Located in rural countryside with abundant open land, the area remains under development and visitors should be aware that this facility is not yet operational.
The project replaces an earlier airport proposal at Aranmula that was abandoned. The new Cheruvally site was selected as better suited to handle millions of pilgrims during peak seasons while minimizing disruption to existing communities in the region.
