Žitomislić Monastery, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Žitomislići, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Žitomislić Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in Žitomislići, in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, centered on a church dedicated to the Annunciation. The complex includes the main church, residential buildings for the monks, and a walled courtyard built in traditional stone.
The monastery was founded in the 16th century on the site of an older church, after the Ottoman authorities gave permission to build there. It was destroyed in the course of the conflicts of the 1990s and left in ruins until reconstruction began.
The monastery has long been a gathering point for Serbian Orthodox Christians from across Herzegovina, especially during religious feasts. Visitors today can walk through the courtyard and observe the daily routines of the monks who still live and work on the grounds.
The monastery sits along the main road between Mostar and the southern border, making it easy to reach by car. Modest dress is expected when visiting, as the site is still an active place of worship.
The reconstruction completed in 2002 deliberately followed traditional building techniques, with craftsmen using the same stone-carving methods as the original builders. Some original fragments recovered from the rubble were incorporated into the new walls.
