Blagaj, Mostar, Historical religious complex at Buna River spring, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Blagaj Dervish Monastery is a religious complex located at the source of the Buna River, which emerges from an underground karst system. The buildings sit directly against a tall limestone wall and create a quiet courtyard overlooking the turquoise water flowing from the cave.
The religious center was established during Ottoman rule, when Dervish orders founded communities across the region. The current structure dates from the 16th century and replaced an earlier complex that stood at the same sacred spring.
The name comes from a Slavic word meaning treasure, reflecting the importance this location held for earlier communities. The building combines elements of Islamic architecture with regional Mediterranean influences and continues to serve as a place for religious gatherings and prayer.
The monastery sits just outside the main settlement and can be reached easily by car or taxi. Visitors should wear modest clothing and remove their shoes before entering, with headscarves available at the entrance.
Three of the building's windows open directly above the spring water and allow views of the riverbed from inside. The main hall contains an ornately carved Quran stand with an open copy that visitors see upon entering.
