Drina river house, Mountain hut on Drina River, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Drina river house is a small wooden hut built on a single boulder rising from the Drina river, near Bajina Bašta. The rock barely clears the waterline, leaving the hut fully surrounded by the river and visible from all sides.
Local young men put up the first version of the hut in 1968, using wooden planks brought along by the river. Since then, flooding has torn it down and locals have rebuilt it each time.
The small structure on the rock has become a recognizable image in the region, drawing photographers and curious visitors to the riverbank. In summer, people gather along the shore to watch it and join boat trips or kayaking outings nearby.
The hut is easy to spot from the riverbank, but a boat lets you get much closer. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit, as the river is also used for swimming and kayaking at that time of year.
The hut has been swept away by floods seven times, and each time volunteers have rebuilt it from scratch. The result is a structure that has changed slightly over the years but always returns to the same rock.
