The Old Town extends across three hills - Nebet Tepe, Dzhambaz Tepe, and Taksim Tepe - covering 35 hectares of architectural monuments and cobblestone streets.
Archaeological findings indicate continuous habitation since 4000 BC, evolving through Thracian, Greek, and Roman periods into a major city called Philippopolis.
The Roman Theatre, constructed during Emperor Trajan's reign, remains active today and hosts performances including the Verdi Festival and International Folklore Festival.
Visitors can explore multiple museum houses, including Balabanov, Hindliyan, and Kuyumdzhioglu, which display traditional architecture and historical exhibitions throughout the year.
The Eastern Gate of Philippopolis, dating from the 2nd century AD, stands on ancient Roman foundations and marks the historical road to Byzantium.
