Library of Parliament
Library of Parliament, Parliamentary library in Ottawa, Canada
Description
The Library of Parliament is a parliamentary library in Ottawa, Canada, with walls of white pine carved with flowers and mythical creatures. Ornamental ironwork runs through the interior, and large windows let in daylight.
History
The building was erected in 1876 and was the only structure to survive the 1916 fire. That fire destroyed the Centre Block completely, yet this building remained unharmed.
Culture
The name reflects its parliamentary function, supporting elected representatives with facts and reference works. Today the space remains a working facility where government staff consult sources and review legislation.
Practical
Access is restricted to individuals involved in government work, as the collection supports parliamentary business. Visitors without official duties cannot enter the rooms.
Did you know?
Heavy iron doors and a connecting corridor separate the building from the Centre Block and acted as a barrier against the fire. These measures preserved the collection and the structure from destruction.
