Nufenen Pass, Mountain pass at 2478 meters between Valais and Ticino, Switzerland.
Nufenen Pass is a mountain road at 2478 meters that connects German-speaking Valais with Italian-speaking Ticino. The route winds through alpine landscape with numerous hairpin turns and gradually changing views of the surrounding peaks.
The paved road through the pass was completed in 1969, creating the first direct motorable connection between Valais and Ticino. Before this, the crossing relied on mountain paths that were difficult to traverse year-round.
The pass marks where German-speaking and Italian-speaking Switzerland meet, visible through the bilingual signs along the route. This boundary creates a distinct crossroads feeling that reflects the country's linguistic diversity.
The pass is closed between November and May due to snow conditions that make driving unsafe. During summer months, the road is open for vehicles and cyclists, though the hairpin turns demand careful driving.
From the summit, you can observe the source of the Ticino River and views of the Gries Glacier stretching toward the south. This combination of water source and glacial landscape makes it a special spot where alpine geography reveals itself naturally.
