Pizzo Rotondo

Pizzo Rotondo, Alpine summit in Valais and Ticino, Switzerland.

Pizzo Rotondo is a 3,192-meter summit in the Lepontine Alps, located between Nufenen Pass and Lukmanier Pass. The peak marks the border between Valais and Ticino and stands as the highest point in this section of the range.

Viktor Haller made the first recorded ascent on August 5, 1869, accompanied by guides Joseph Maria Trösch and Angelo Boffa. This early climb reflects the period when mountaineers began exploring the higher peaks of this Alpine region.

The mountain forms part of the Gotthard Group and marks the meeting point of three major European river basins: Rhine, Rhône, and Po.

Glaciers on both the northern and southern slopes form part of the climbing approach to the summit. Visitors should expect alpine terrain and variable weather conditions that can change rapidly during the day.

The peak's granite composition provides solid rock for climbing, making it popular with mountaineers seeking reliable handholds and anchor points. Multiple established routes exist, each offering different levels of technical difficulty and views.
