Chüebodenhorn, Mountain summit at 3070 meters in Valais and Ticino, Switzerland
Chüebodenhorn is a mountain summit at 3070 meters (10,075 feet) located between the cantons of Valais and Ticino in the Swiss Alps. The peak displays rocky granite sections alongside seasonal snow and ice formations that create a varied landscape.
The mountain was first climbed in 1875 by English historian and mountaineer William Augustus Brevoort Coolidge, marking the start of its climbing history. This ascent brought the peak into mountaineering records and knowledge.
This summit sits where Swiss German and Italian-speaking communities meet, making it a natural boundary between two Alpine regions. The mountain reflects this cultural division through its bilingual place names and local traditions.
The hike starts from Ospizio All'Acqua at 1614 meters (5,295 feet) and passes through Capanna Piansecco on the way to the summit. Plan for about 8 hours of climbing and bring proper mountain gear, as conditions change quickly at altitude.
Near the mountain stands Fiamma di Baggio, a narrow rock formation that has never been successfully climbed due to its unstable stone structure. Climbers find it a memorable landmark even though reaching the top remains technically very difficult.
