Mount Manengouba

Mount Manengouba, Protected volcano in Littoral Region, Cameroon.

Mount Manengouba is a volcano in the Moungo region, with its summit reaching about 2,400 meters above sea level. At its upper slopes sit two crater lakes surrounded by lush green vegetation, each with distinct characteristics.

The volcano formed during the Pleistocene epoch, establishing itself as part of the Cameroon volcanic chain. This ancient geological activity continues to shape the landscape and characteristics of the region today.

The Bakossi people regard the twin lakes as sacred sites where traditional ceremonies continue to occur. The male lake holds special spiritual significance and remains restricted to Mbo priests within the community.

Visitors can reach the mountain from Melong via Mbouroukou village, with guided tours available for exploration. It is wise to allow adequate time for the climb and prepare for high altitude conditions.

The two crater lakes differ not only in size but also in their color and shape. The larger one displays a deep blue hue and resembles the African continent, while the smaller one remains distinctly green.
