Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife refuge in Southwest, Cameroon.
Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary is a large forest reserve in Southwest Cameroon that protects diverse plants and animals across its wooded terrain. The sanctuary is organized with observation areas where visitors can spot birds, reptiles, and primates moving through the canopy and forest floor.
The sanctuary was officially established in 1996 through a government decision to protect the diverse forest and its wildlife from declining populations. This protection order came as conservation efforts began to focus on preserving the region's natural habitats.
The Mbo and Banyangi communities living around the sanctuary have long connections to these forests and maintain traditional relationships with the land. They adapt their practices to work with conservation efforts that protect the natural resources.
Wear sturdy shoes and bring rain gear, as forest trails can be wet and muddy depending on the season. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to visit, when animals are most active and visible.
This forest harbors one of the largest populations of a type of chimpanzee found in this part of Africa, a species rarely seen elsewhere. Though hard to spot, their presence makes this location important for wildlife research and conservation work.
