Baloum, Agricultural settlement in Menoua Division, Western Cameroon
Baloum is an agricultural settlement spread across four main villages in the mountainous terrain of Western Cameroon. The communities are located on high plateaus at an elevation of approximately 1,900 meters (6,200 feet).
The name Baloum comes from the persistent cloud cover that blankets this mountain region. The settlement developed as a traditional Bamileke community on the high plateaus of Western Cameroon.
Two traditional councils shape community decisions and daily life in this settlement, with each handling distinct aspects of governance. Visitors walking through the villages can observe how these parallel structures influence social practices and celebrations.
Visitors should prepare for the high altitude climate with cool temperatures and frequent cloud cover typical of this highland region. The drier months from December to March offer easier conditions for exploring the villages and surrounding terrain.
The distinct dry season from December to March and rainy season from March to November create a clear rhythm that shapes village life. This seasonal pattern influences farming practices, road conditions, and when community gatherings typically occur.
