Mount Kupe, Granite volcanic mountain in Koupé-Manengouba, Cameroon
Mount Kupe is a granite mountain of volcanic origin that rises to about 2064 meters in the Koupé-Manengouba region. The slopes are covered with mid-altitude rainforest, interrupted by small grassy clearings at higher elevations.
The mountain was documented in the 1890s by European missionaries who noted its strong magical reputation among local populations in the Western High Plateau. These early records reveal how deeply the peak was woven into local belief systems.
The mountain holds sacred meaning for the Bakossi people, who see it as home to ancestral and forest spirits. Local communities view the slopes around Nyasoso as spiritually significant spaces woven into daily life.
The northern slopes above Nyasoso village offer the best-preserved forest areas for nature observation across elevations between 300 and 1500 meters. Plan your hike with proper gear and allow plenty of time, as the terrain is demanding.
The mountain is home to around 330 bird species and serves as critical habitat for endangered primates such as chimpanzees and rare bush shrikes. This biological richness makes it a regional focus for researchers and nature enthusiasts.
