Mbe Mountains Community Forest

The Mbe Mountains Community Forest spans 85 square kilometers, reaching elevations of 900 meters with diverse ecosystems of tropical vegetation and wildlife corridors.

The forest gained protected status in 2005 through a collaborative effort between nine local communities and the Wildlife Conservation Society to preserve endangered species.

Nine communities with 10,000 residents maintain traditional ownership of the mountains while working with conservation groups to protect natural resources.

The Wildlife Conservation Society manages 14 eco-guards who conduct regular patrols to monitor wildlife populations and prevent illegal hunting activities.

The forest serves as a critical habitat for Cross River gorillas, Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzees, drills, and grey-necked rockfowl, connecting to Afi Mountain and Cross River National Park.
